We felt it too: a city gone quiet, wings clipped. With the Municipality of Nijmegen we shaped Vrije Vogels, a living platform that invites 14 to 27 year olds to move, create and connect. Free entry, open to every level, continuously growing with partners across the city.
We built the name, story and flexible identity, then delivered plug-in templates and a clear messaging kit so organizations can add activities fast, all pointing to one simple call to action. It works because barriers drop, ownership spreads and momentum builds. The city gives energy to its youth, and its youth light the city back up.

In Nijmegen, we feel like Free Birds. The oldest city in the Netherlands, yet the youngest at heart.

Background
The COVID period affected many, but especially young people, in countless ways. We felt caged, our wings tied down. The government and the city of Nijmegen saw and felt it too. From a lively city to quiet streets, from being together to being alone.
With the Free Birds campaign, designed and executed by ROSH, and as part of the SPUK cultural participation program Impuls, Nijmegen wanted to give its young residents back the city’s energy, and in return, let the city feel their energy once more.

Young adults in Nijmegen, up to the age of 27, could regain their wings, learn to fly higher, or feel the wind at their back again through a diverse program of cultural activities and partner organizations. Every part of the program is freely accessible.

We linked the pillars of culture to different species of birds and translated that connection into the campaign’s visuals and messaging. This strengthened the analogy between birds and culture: themes of flight, freedom, character, nesting, wind, and togetherness mirrored the creative energy and diversity of Nijmegen’s cultural scene.

Each of these pillars was represented by a hand-drawn bird with its own color and unique design. Every bird was paired with a piece of Nijmegen-focused copy, an active verb that represents participation and creative expression.
